Samba Drumming
On Wednesday December 6th
Transition Year students participated in a samba drumming session in
the school hall. Samba drumming has been part of Oatlands’
Transition Year programme for the last few years and this time the
2006/07 TY students had a chance to play some of the Brazilian
music.
At the start of the session
everyone sat in a big circle with an instrument in front of them.
The instruments ranged from bass drums to shakers. In less than two
hours everyone in the class was able to play their instrument as
part of a group for a samba tune involving an intro, a main groove,
section breaks and an ending. The first years were the only year
lucky enough to see the main performance at the end of the session
and they were also given a part in the performance singing some high
notes and clapping along with the beat.
The samba drumming workshop
was enjoyed by all the students who took part. (Colm Healy)
