Ecology Trip

On Tuesday November 7th, TY 2 went to Wicklow on an ecology trip. We were taken into a woodland area to identify plants and animals. The first thing we did was identify plants using a key, and then we mapped out an area in the woodland of 10m X 10m which we drew a sketch of, including all the different trees and plants inside this area. Next we did some random plant sampling by throwing a quadrant 5 times and noting what plants were in the area where it landed each time.

After a short break we got back to work and went from the coniferous part of the forest to the deciduous part. Here we did some more random sampling using the quadrant. We found that the results here were very different from the coniferous woodland even though it was only a couple of metres away.

When were finished examining plants we moved onto animals. We caught some beetles, worms, spiders, and other insects and looked at them more closely. This was the last thing we had to do on our trip and afterwards we went back to the bus and came back to Oatlands.(Colm Healy)
