Schools
Across Borders
A group of six
Israeli students, four girls and two boys, , visited
Oatlands on 11th December, with their teachers,
as part of the Schools Across Borders initiative to promote
a better understanding of conflict resolution. Transition
Year students, James Doyle and Daniel O Leary, hosted two of
the Israelis during their week long stay in Ireland. One of
the most enjoyable experiences for the students was the trip
up to Belfast where they had an opportunity to discuss the
Troubles with their Catholic and Protestant counterparts and
found they had to figure out exactly why the Catholics
defined themselves as Irish whereas the Protestants regarded
themselves as Northern Irish. Visiting the murals was also
an interesting experience for them .
A group of young
Palestinians will arrive at the end of January. They will
also have an opportunity to meet with students from
Northern Ireland. James Doyle, Ciarán Hogarty and Alex
Brophy, are then being given the opportunity to visit
Israel and Palestine during the mid-term break.
