Transition Year Activities

For the second year in a row Oatlands Transition Year students are involved in teaching parishioners basic computing skills as part of their Community Service Work under the Log On, Learn initiative. It is envisaged as a two way process in which the focus is on fun, sharing skills, stories and learning for life.

Oatlands and Sion Hill Transition Year students are currently in rehearsals for their production of Lionel Bart’s classic musical Oliver, based on Charles Dickens’ novel, which they will perform in the School Sports Hall from Monday 4th to Thursday 7th of April. This production, the sixth in the series of collaborations between Oatlands and Sion Hill, promises, once again, to be one of the highlights of the school calendar.

Schools Across Borders

A group of six Israeli students, four girls and two boys, , visited Oatlands on 11th December, with their teachers, as part of the Schools Across Borders initiative to promote a better understanding of conflict resolution. Transition Year students, James Doyle and Daniel O Leary, hosted two of the Israelis during their week long stay in Ireland. One of the most enjoyable experiences for the students was the trip up to Belfast where they  had an opportunity to discuss the Troubles with their Catholic and Protestant counterparts and found they had to  figure out exactly why the Catholics defined themselves as Irish whereas the Protestants regarded themselves as Northern Irish. Visiting the murals was also an interesting experience for them .

A group of young Palestinians will arrive at the end of January. They will also have an opportunity to meet with  students from Northern Ireland.  James Doyle, Ciarán Hogarty and Alex Brophy,  are then being  given the opportunity to visit Israel and Palestine during the mid-term break.
