Physical Education is an important compulsory element for all students in Oatlands College. All students are timetabled to participate in these classes. Physical Education classes are conducted in the College Sports Hall or on its playing pitches for the most part. However some classes, Transition Year in particular our taken to various local locations to further the range of activities offered.

 

Aims

In keeping with the Mission Statement of Oatlands College, it is intended that Physical Education should:

 

Ø  Contribute to the personal development of our students:

-                      enable the students to develop a positive attitude towards Physical Education as an interesting and valuable subject of study

-                      foster the students appreciation of creative and aesthetic aspect of all types of physical activity

-                      enhancement of the student’s sense of self through the development of skilful and creative performance of practical activities

 

Ø  Contribute to the preparation of the student for a life of autonomous wellbeing:

-       development of the student’s understanding of physical activity and awareness of the links between physical education and other curricular areas

-       motivation of the student to choose a lifestyle that is active, healthy and meaningful

-       the personal enrichment of the student by developing personal and social skills, and encouraging positive attitudes and values in their interaction with others.

 

 

Extra-Curricular Activities:

 

Students are invited and encouraged to participate in a wide variety of sports and other activities. Each year, the school competes in inter-school competitions in Hurling, Gaelic Football, Basketball, Soccer, Athletics, Rugby, Archery, Judo, Golf, Chess, and Badminton.

Teams enter Business Quiz Competitions, Inter-School Debate Competitions, Student Enterprise Awards, the Young Scientists’ Competition, Young Social Innovators, Build a Bank, and Edmund Rice Awards. Students also participate in Schools Across Borders, and the Zambia Immersion Programme.

 

Each year a College Musical is performed by Transition Year students in association with the girls from Sion Hill. Talent Shows are held on a regular basis.

 

There is an annual School Tour in Transition Year to a continental destination (subject to sufficient uptake). Students regularly participate in cultural and educational outings. Transition Year students may complete the ECDL Computer Course and Oatlands College is a recognised accrediting centre.

 A Newsletter `Oatlands News` is currently published twice a year.
